Stop the funding of repression  23/08/2009

He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry.  The Lord sets prisoners free….  Psalm 146:7

Sunday 23 August

Father, we pray for the human rights situation in Eritrea and especially for the Eritrean Government, a leadership which has shown itself to be unconcerned about the wellbeing of its people.

Monday 24 August

Pray for the approximately 3,000 Eritrean Christians who are imprisoned in terrible conditions simply because of their faith.  Also pray for the thousands of non-Christian prisoners who are being held without charge in similar conditions.

Tuesday 25 August

Please pray for military conscripts who are currently being used as forced labour in government projects and who have been forced to serve in the military for an ‘indefinite’ period of time.

Wednesday 26 August

Pray for the thousands of Eritreans who fled political and religious persecution and interminable military service.  Pray also for those who have been forcibly repatriated, particularly for those who faced torture and imprisonment upon their return.

Thursday 27 August

Praise God for the gradual release of elderly Christians detained during a wave of arrests that began in November last year.  Ask God to strengthen and encourage the many younger people who are still being held.

Friday 28 August

Please also pray for the health of all of Eritrea’s prisoners.  A number of them have suffered severe abuse and now have health problems because of failure to be given proper medical treatment.  Pray for the families and loved ones of those who have died as a result of mistreatment.

Saturday 29 August

Eritrea is on the brink of serious famine.  Since January, over 2,000 people are so far reported to have died from hunger and from eating pesticide-contaminated grain.  Pray God’s mercy, provision, healing and deliverance for the people of Eritrea.

Sunday 30 August

Pray that the European Commission would be receptive to our open letter and that they would begin emphasising human rights improvements in their dialogue with the Eritrean leadership.

Monday 31 August

Pray that the money granted by the EU will actually be used to help those who need it and that it won’t help to support the repression carried out by the president and the military.  Pray that the Eritrean leadership would begin to seriously address ongoing human rights abuses in the country.

Provide

Provide medical and other assistance for destitute Eritreans who have escaped from unlawful detention and repression.

For the many Christians who are in prison in Eritrea for no reason other than their faith, life is terrible. But even if they do manage to escape, they often find themselves in an even worse situation – completely destitute, with no food, no clothes, no money, nowhere to live, and some are still being hunted down by the Eritrean authorities. CSW is there for them in their desperate need, providing the essentials they need to survive, while our advocacy staff work to secure them a better future.
