CSW welcomes sentencing of Peru’s former President  08/04/2009

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) is welcoming the verdict and twenty-five year sentence handed down on Tuesday, April 7, to former President, Alberto Fujimori, by the Special Tribunal in Lima, Peru.

The decision, in which Fujimori was found guilty on charges of authorising murders and kidnapping, is a landmark ruling in Peru and for the region. It marks the first time in Latin America that a democratically elected leader has been tried and found guilty of human rights crimes in their own country. CSW joins its Peruvian partners, Peace and Hope and CEAS, in recognising the integrity of the trial and the judges, not only in the final decision but throughout the entire process.

This event sets a precedent for Peru and for Latin America and sends a strong message to leaders around the world that they can and will be held to account for their actions.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) is a human rights organisation which specialises in religious freedom, works on behalf of those persecuted for their Christian beliefs and promotes religious liberty for all.
